COLLISION NEAR ST. JOSEPH'S ISLAND CLAIMS ONE LIFE
Desbarats, Ont.,

The Thessalon office of East Algoma OPP detachment is currently investigating a collision that has claimed the life of a Desbarats woman.

At about 11:00 a.m. this morning a vehicle driven by Shirley MacKay of Desbarats was going south on Hwy 548 halfway between the St Joseph's Island Bridge and Hwy 17. The MacKay vehicle lost control and crossed the center line into the path of an empty logging truck.

Fifty-one year old Shirley MacKay, of Desbarats, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, thirty-nine year old Donald MacLeod of Bruce Mines Ont., was not injured in the accident.

Hwy 548 re-opened as of 5:oo p.m. although motorists can expect some delays when passing the area. OPP have called in a technical traffic accident reconstructionist and the members of Technical Identification Services Unit in our efforts to determine the cause.

At the time it was overcast with no precipitation.
