Three face weapons charges

On July 7, 2017, at approximately 8:10 p.m., members of the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call on Gong Lake in Handleman Township.

The call for service involved in an altercation involving a group of people. 

An argument ensued and escalated between two boaters. Once the police investigation was complete, three males were arrested and charged.    

Albert Sewell, 61 years of age of Batchewana First Nation, Ont. was charged with:

  • Pointing a firearm (three counts), contrary to section 87 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Use firearm while committing an offence, contrary to section 85(1)(a) of the CC
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC
  • The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on July 14, 2017.

Peter Sewell, 39 years of age of Batchewana First Nation, Ont. was charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon (two counts), contrary to section 267(a) of the CC
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC

Michael McGonegal, 46 years of age of Goulais Township, Ont. was charged with:

  • Mischief - destroys or damages property, contrary to section 430(1)(a) of the CC
  • Dangerous operation of vessel, contrary to section 249(1)(b) of the CC
  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC

These accused persons are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 11, 2017.
