Thessalon resident faces numerous charges, including assaulting a peace officer

Police say the 36-year-old was intoxicated and trying to pull people over using a cell phone with flashing lights

A Thessalon resident faces multiple charges stemming from an incident in Bruce Mines earlier this week, East Algoma OPP said in a news release today. 

Police say they responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. yesterday where an intoxicated person was in the middle of the street using a cell phone with flashing lights to try to pull people over. 

According to police, the complainant was parked at a local gas station when the suspect noticed the complainant on the phone, walked towards the vehicle and began kicking the complainant's car. 

Upon arrival, police observed the suspect sitting on a bench at the gas station and slouched over. The suspect became assaultive and resistant towards police as they were making an arrest.

As a result Mark Vasey, 36, from Thessalon was arrested and faces multiple charges (listed below).

BRUCE MINES — On Feb. 22, 2022, shortly after 7:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic hazard where an intoxicated person was in the middle of Taylor Street  using a cell phone with flashing lights, trying to pull people over in the Town of Bruce Mines.

The complainant was parked at a local gas station when the suspect person noticed the complainant on the phone and walked towards the vehicle and began kicking the complainant's car. 

A short time later police arrived on scene and observed the suspect known to them sitting on bench at the gas station and slouched over. The suspect became assaultive and resistant towards police as they were making an arrest.

As a result, Mark Vasey, 36 years-of-age from Thessalon was charged with:

  • Mischief, obstruct, interrupts or interferes with lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property, contrary to section 430(1)(c) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
  • Assault peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the CC (two counts)
  • Uttering threats - Cause death or bodily harm, contrary to section 264.1(1) of the CC
  • Utter threats - Damage property, contrary to section 264.1(1)(b) of the CC
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC
  • Failure to attend court after having appeared, contrary to section 145(2)(b) of the CC

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Feb. 23, 2022.
