The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police will be ramping up patrols for the Labour Day long weekend.

Officers will be out on roadways, waterways and trails, looking for what they're calling "the big four" offenses, which can be factors in collisions and fatalities.

They will be looking for alcohol related offenses, distracted driving, aggressive driving and seatbelt violations.

The full OPP press release on their long weekend actions is included below.

The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are set to conduct patrols for Labour Day long weekend (Sept. 2 - 5, 2022).  The OPP will be out on our roadways, waterways, and trails, taking a combined approach of education and focused enforcement during the initiative.

The OPP will increase public compliance with traffic laws relating to the "big four" causal factors in motor vehicle collision fatalities, with the aim of saving lives. The "big four" consists of:

  • Impaired - alcohol/drug related
  • Distracted driving - including texting, inattentiveness
  • Aggressive driving - including speeding
  • Seatbelts - lack of occupant restraint

"Deaths caused by distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving, and failing to use seatbelts are 100 per cent preventable," says East Algoma Detachment Commander Tyler Sturgeon. "Drivers make an active choice to put the public, and themselves, at risk when they engage in these behaviours - these aren't accidents. Please make the right choice and allow everyone to travel safely while enjoying the last long weekend of the summer".

The OPP and its traffic safety partners remain committed to saving lives on our roads. Drivers can significantly contribute to safe roads by avoiding risks and complying with applicable traffic laws. Do your part to ensure the safety for all operators this weekend, whether in a car, a boat, or on an ATV. We all want to arrive at our destination and spend time with friends and family.
