SUV stopped for speeding. Driver faces cannabis charges, too

WHITE RIVER - On April 20, 2019, a member of the Superior East Detachment of the OPP stopped a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) for speeding on Highway 17 in Alanen Township.  

While speaking with the driver, the odour of raw cannabis was detected coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small quantity of cannabis within reach of the driver.

A 22-year-old male, from Sault Ste Marie, Ont. was charged with the following: 

  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the CCA,
  • Speeding 1-49 km/h over posted limit, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The OPP would like to remind the public that although cannabis is now legal to possess and consume, it is not legal to have cannabis in a vehicle or boat unless one or both of the following conditions are met; 

  • Cannabis is in its original packaging and has not been opened; OR
  • Cannabis is packed in baggage that is fastened closed or is not otherwise readily available to any person in the vehicle or boat.
