Suspended driver nabbed near Thessalon: OPP

Police have charged Shawn Bisaillon following an incident that occurred in Thessalon last evening.

A news release issued today by the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) states that patrol officers recognized the accused as being a suspended driver after he was observed driving in the area of Highway 17B and Highway 17.

The release alleges that Bisaillon attempted to evade police by driving westbound on Highway 17.

He was apprehended a short time later.

Full text of the OPP release follows:

THESSALON - On June 14, 2021, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties in the Town of Thessalon.

At approximately 8:08 p.m., police observed a vehicle enter the intersection of Highway 17B and Highway 17 being driven by a person known to them as being a suspended driver.

The vehicle then proceeded westbound on Highway 17 [allegedly] attempting to evade police. A short time later, police located the vehicle parked at the end of McPhee Road with nobody in it. Once police were on scene, the driver walked out to police from the bushes.

As a result, Shawn Bisaillon, 21 years of age from Thessalon First Nation, was charged with:
    •    Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Failure to attend court after having appeared, contrary to section 145(2)(b) of the CC
    •    Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act
    •    Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on June 15, 2021 and was remanded into custody.
