A winter storm that is blasting Sault Ste Marie and area has brought this area to a virtual stand still.

Highway 17 East is closed from the Sault to Blind River. Highway 17 North of Sault Ste Marie from Heyden to Wawa is closed due to high winds, blowing snow and zero visibility. Emergency crews are experiencing great difficulty getting to any problems in the entire area.

Sault Ste Marie OPP is recommending that no one leave their home for any non-emergency reason. Road conditions both in and out of the city are terrible.

Heavy rains all day Saturday quickly froze when a cold front moved into this area around supper time Saturday night. All roads are covered by a layer of ice with snow and drifting snow covering the roads.

Some road ways have a large amount of water covering them from the excessive amount of rain that fell all day Saturday.
