Sault woman found dead near Fenelon Falls, Bruce Mines man accused of murder

Police have identified 65-year-old Shirley Hatley of Sault Ste. Marie as the victim of a homicide that took place in the area of Fenelon Falls earlier this week.

In a news release issued today, Kawartha Lakes OPP say that on the morning of July 11, 2021, they responded to a call for assistance after a body was recovered from Sturgeon Lake.

Police say they've arrested and charged 56-year-old Norman May, of Bruce Mines, with second degree murder as a result.

CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES – Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested an individual in connection with what is now determined to be a homicide in the area of Fenelon Falls.  

On the morning of July 11, 2021, officers responded to a call for assistance after a body was recovered from Sturgeon Lake. A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto. The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Shirley Hatley of Sault Ste Marie, Ont.  

Investigators have arrested and charged Norman May, 56 years of age of Bruce Mines, Ont., with second degree murder. The accused remains in custody after a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay on July 12, 2021.
