Sault man charged with impaired boating

GOULAIS TOWNSHIP - On May 27, 2018 at approximately 2:45 p.m., members of the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general marine patrol of the Goulais River waterway. Officers conducted a stop with a small vessel.

As a result of further investigation, Michael James Burke, age 36 of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was arrested and charged with:
    •    Operate vessel with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Operate non-human powered pleasure craft without prescribed vessel safety equipment on board contrary to section 206(a) of the Canada Shipping Act (CSA)
    •    Failure to have proof of competency on board a pleasure craft, contrary to section 3(1)(b) of the Competency of Operator of Pleasure Craft Regulations(COPCR)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. on June 18, 2018.
