Police arrest alleged impaired driver in Thessalon First Nation with no licence, children in the car

Police have laid impaired driving charges in Thessalon First Nation against a driver who they say had two toddlers in the car.

Police report searching for an individual in the area of Biish Road in the Territory of Thessalon First Nation on Sunday just after 10:30 p.m.

OPP say they observed a vehicle with no plates in the area and initiated a traffic stop on Oak Ridge Road. While speaking to the driver police determined the driver had consumed alcohol.

In the vehicle were two toddlers that officers say were not restrained into car seats. 

Police searched the vehicle and located a small quantity of suspected fentanyl and open liquor.

As a result of the investigation, Deloris Waboose, 30, from Thessalon First Nation, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14 (1)(a)  of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Operation while impaired - blood Alcohol concentration 80 plus contrary to section 320.14 (1)(b) of the CC;
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - other drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • Drive motor vehicle, no plates, contrary to section 7(1)(b)(i) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
  • Drive motor Vehicle - no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA;
  • Drive without proper rear light - motor vehicle, contrary to section 62(1) of the HTA;
  • Two counts of fail to ensure toddler properly secured, contrary to section 8(3) of Ontario Regulations 613 of the HTA; and with
  • Having care and control of a motor vehicle with open container of liquor.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Feb. 11, 2021.
