Passing police cruiser 'at high rate of speed' leads to impaired charges

Police have charged Matthew Alloy with impaired driving following an incident on Great Northern Road last evening.

A news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) states that a traffic stop was initiated after a vehicle driven by the 26-year-old accused passed an OPP cruiser at a high rate of speed.

Full text of the OPP release follows:

SAULT STE. MARIE - On Aug. 19, 2021 at approximately 7 p.m., members of the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle approaching from the rear travelling at a high rate of speed. The black Chevrolet Impala then passed the officer as well as numerous other vehicles on Great Northern Road in the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

Police initiated a traffic stop and determined the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. The driver was then arrested and transport to detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew Alloy, 26 years old of Aweres Township, was charged with:
    •    dangerous operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC
    •    operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 20, 2021.

The accused was issued a 90 day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
