OPP respond to fatal crash north of Pancake Bay

A 25-year-old driver from Hearst died Sunday night as a result of a head-on collision on Highway 17 north of Pancake Bay, states a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The other driver was transported to Sault hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigation into the crash continues.

RYAN TOWNSHIP - On March 27, 2022 at approximately 8 p.m., members from the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Sault Ste Marie Paramedic Services and Batchawana Fire Rescue responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a car and an SUV on Highway 17 at Sawpit Bay in Ryan Township (north of Pancake Provincial Park).

Investigation determined a car was travelling southbound on Highway 17 and crossed the centre line colliding head on with a northbound SUV.

The single occupant/driver of the car, Clovis Vallieres, 25 years old from Hearst, was pronounced deceased at scene.

The driver of the SUV sustained non life-threatening injuries was transported to local hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

The investigation is ongoing with the OPP's North East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team (TIME) and the Technical Collision Investigators (TCI).

Highway 17 was closed in both directions from Batchawana Bay to Wawa and was fully reopened at 3:08 a.m. on March 28, 2022.
