One faces weapons, assault charges following Blind River courthouse altercation

On Feb. 6, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were present at the Ontario Court of Justice in the Town of Blind River for Criminal Court. During a recess in court, the OPP were alerted to an altercation occurring in front of the Court House.

Officers responded immediately and arrested a person who was in possession of an edged weapon.

A 20-year-old victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Assisting with the ongoing investigation are members from the OPP East Algoma Crime Unit and members from the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit.

As a result of the investigation, Cody Chiblow, 25 years of age from Mississauga First Nation, Ont. has been charged with:

  • Aggravated assault, contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Weapons dangerous, contrary to section 88 of the CC; and with
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1 of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on Feb. 7, 2020 and was remanded into custody.
