Man, woman arrested during stop in Thessalon

IRON BRIDGE - On Mar. 13, 2017, shortly after 1 p.m., members of the East Algoma Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of gas in the Town of Iron Bridge. The vehicle left the local gas station in a westbound direction on Highway 17.

Thessalon OPP located the vehicle on Water Street in the Town of Thessalon. The vehicle was unoccupied. Police learned the vehicle was stolen from Cobourg, Ontario. 

A male and a female were seen leaving the vehicle and were located a short time later walking on Main Street. Investigation determined the couple were the occupants of the stolen vehicle.

As a result, the male driver, Mark Hendry, 38 years of age, from Cobourg, Ontario, was charged with: 

  • Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 355(a) of the CC;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 355(b) of the CC;
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC; and
  • Fail to comply with recognizance (X2), contrary to section 266 of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on March 14, 2017.

The female passenger, Ashley Head, 23 years of age, from Cobourg, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Theft over $5,000, contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 355(a) of the CC;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 355(b) of the CC; and
  • Obstruct peace office, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Mar. 14, 2017.
