Heyden man facing numerous charges, SIU also investigating

The SIU has invoked its mandate after an altercation between officers and the accused

A threats complaint in Heyden on Friday led to a response by members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), OPP Crime Unit, OPP Canine Unit, OPP Crisis Negotiator, members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Batchewana Police Service.

As a result of the investigation, 60-year-old John Wigle of Heyden is facing charges, including:

  • Assault with intent to resist arrest, 270(1)(b) Criminal Code (CC),
  • Escape lawful custody, 145(1) CC,
  • Utter threats - cause death or bodily harm, 264.1(1)(a) CC (five counts),
  • Utter threats - damage property, 264.1(1)(b) CC,
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, 320.18(1)(a) CC, and
  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, 145(5)(a) CC (two counts)

An OPP release issued Saturday evening said that the Special Investigations Unit was also invoking its mandate.

The release said that the interaction required the use of force to control the accused, but no serious injuries were sustained.
