Helicopter used to track suspects after driver of stolen truck rams cruiser, flees police

On Sept. 23, 2019 at approximately 9:30 a.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a break and enter occurrence on Shaw Road, north of Little Rapids, Ont.

Officers located and stopped a pickup truck with two occupants. The truck was pulling an off-road vehicle on a trailer and all vehicles were later identified as stolen property. 

During the traffic stop, police also observed stolen property within the motor vehicle. The driver of the pickup truck then proceeded to drive away from police and a pursuit was initiated. [It is alleged that] the vehicle driver then purposely collided with an OPP vehicle and fled from police.

The OPP Aviation Services - Helicopter Section, located the pickup truck on Sept. 23, 2019, at a residence on Cloudslee Road in Plummer Additional Township and three persons were arrested in relation to this occurrence.

The East Algoma Crime Unit, the OPP Emergency Response Team, the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit, the OPP Canine Unit, the OPP Aviation Services - Unmanned Aerial System Section and the OPP Negotiator all assisted in this ongoing investigation.

Police located and seized various stolen property including firearms, ammunition, machinery and tools as well as sporting goods.

Ryan Elliot, 35-years-old, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., has been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (two counts) contrary to section 355(a) Criminal Code (CC),
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (two counts) contrary to section 355(b) CC,
  • Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order contrary to section 117.01(1) CC,
  • Flight from peace officer contrary to section 320.17 CC,
  • Dangerous operation contrary to section 320.13(1) CC,
  • Pointing a firearm contrary to section 87 CC,
  • Fail to comply with probation order contrary to section 733.1(1) CC, and
  • Operation while prohibited contrary to section 320.18 CC.

The accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie, Ont., on Oct. 2, 2019, to answer to the charges.

Cheryl Tookenay, 40-years-old, of Sault Ste Marie, Ont. has been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (two counts) contrary to section 355(a) CC,
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (two counts) contrary to section 355(b) CC, and
  • Fail to comply with conditions of undertaking given by officer in charge contrary to section 145(5.1) CC.

The accused has been released following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, Ont., on Nov. 7, 2019, to answer to the charges.

Janice Cherniwchan, 38-years-old, of Plummer Additional Township, Ont. has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 contrary to section 355(a) CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, Ont. on Nov. 7, 2019, to answer to the charge.
