Assault, uttering threats, animal cruelty

The following are news releases issued by the Ontario Provincial Police:

BLIND RIVER - On Sept. 2, 2017, shortly after 6 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute at a residence on Youngfox Drive in the Town of Blind River.

A married couple had been indulging in alcohol and an argument ensued. The argument escalated to where the female was physically assaulted. As an officer was dealing with the male, he became assaultive towards police.

As a result of the investigation, a 69-year-old male was arrested and charged with:

  • assault-spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • assault peace officer, contrary to section 270(1)(a0 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 5, 2017.

BLIND RIVER - On Aug. 28, 2017, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began an investigation into a threat that was made at a local restaurant on Highway 17 in the Village of Spragge.

Investigation determined that on Aug. 25, 2017, while in the restaurant a male had uttered a physical threat to harm his ex-wife referencing a time when they were married.   

As the investigation continued, police determined that while the couple were married the male threatened to physically harm her between January and February 2001 while residing at a residence on Highway 108 in the City of Elliot Lake.

 At the same residence between the years of 1998 and 2000 the victim witnessed cases of animal cruelty towards family pets.

As a result of the investigation, a 51-year-old male from Spragge, Ontario, was charged with:

  • uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm- Spousal (X2), contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • cruelty to animals - unnecessary pain, suffering or injury, contrary to section 445.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 5, 2017
