COLLISION NEAR ST. JOSEPH'S ISLAND CLAIMS ONE LIFE
Desbarats, Ont.,

The Thessalon office of East Algoma OPP detachment is currently investigating a collision that has claimed the life of a Desbarats woman.

At about 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning, a vehicle driven by Shirley MacKay of Desbarats was going south on Hwy 548 halfway between the St Joseph's Island Bridge and Hwy 17. The MacKay vehicle lost control and crossed the center line into the path of an empty logging truck.

Fifty-one year old Shirley MacKay, of Desbarats, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, thirty-nine year old Donald MacLeod of Bruce Mines Ont., was not injured.

Traffic was blocked in both directions from the time of the accident until 5:00 p.m. School buses were unable to pass the location making many students late returning home.

At the time it was overcast with no precipitation. The OPP continue to investigate.
