Five arrests made in connection to fatal shooting on Manitoulin Island: OPP

A news release issued by the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reports that one person has died following a shooting incident that occurred in M'Chigeeng First Nation early Tuesday morning.

The suspects fled the scene before police arrival, but were apprehended during a traffic stop in the area a short time later.

Five individuals have been charged, but the names of the accused and the charges they face have yet to be released.

M'CHIGEENG FIRST NATION - Several arrests have been made in connection to a shooting death on Pine Street in M'Chigeeng First Nation.

On April 5, 2022 shortly after 1:30 a.m., members of the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police (UCCM) and the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a shooting on Pine Street in M'Chigeeng First Nation.

Upon arrival, police learned that one person had been shot and that the suspects had fled the scene in a vehicle. The injured person was transported to hospital but later died as a result of his injuries.

OPP members conducted a traffic stop in the area and arrested five individuals.

The UCCM Crime Unit in conjunction with the OPP Manitoulin Crime Unit, the OPP North East Region Support Team, the OPP North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, and the North East Region Forensic Identification Services, are continuing this investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

There is no threat to public safety at this time. Further updates will be provided when available.
