Fatality reported in weekend Highway 17 crash (update: photos added)

Two others taken to hospital with serious injuries

A three-vehicle crash on Highway 17 near Havilland Shores Drive has claimed the life of 81-year-old Richard Harrison of Sault Ste. Marie.

Two others involved in the collision were taken to hospital with serious injuries, says an OPP news release.

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Detachment), the Goulais River Fire Department and Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services responded to the scene on Saturday afternoon.

On Oct. 1, 2022 shortly after 3 p.m., members from the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Goulais River Fire Department and Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision involving three vehicles on Highway 17 near Havilland Shores Drive in Goulais Township.

Investigation determined a northbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on the roadway, continued straight in the southbound lane where it made contact with one vehicle who narrowly avoided a head on collision and continued on and collided head-on with a second vehicle.

The passenger of the second vehicle, 81-year-old Richard Harrison from Sault Ste. Marie, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two drivers of the head-on collision were taken to local hospital in Sault Ste. Marie with serious injuries.

The investigation is on-going with the OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI) and reconstructionist.

The Office of the Chief Corner for Ontario - Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCCO-OFPS) is assisting and a post-mortem examination will take place at a later date.
