Elliot Lake man charged in drug bust

Police seized a significant amount of suspected cocaine, cash, a cell phone, and drug paraphernalia

On Dec. 10, 2018 at 5:52 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended an apartment on Willoughby Road in Elliot Lake, Ont. to execute a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) warrant.

The OPP's Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), Emergency Response Team (ERT), and the East Algoma Crime Unit were involved with the investigation.

As a result of the warrant being executed, police seized a significant amount of suspected cocaine, over $650 in cash, a cell phone, and drug paraphernalia. The estimated street value of the drugs was over $6,000. There was also extensive damage to the inside of the apartment.

Robert Chaylt, 55 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:
    •    possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the (CDSA),
    •    possession property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    mischief over $5,000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC,
    •    fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC.

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ont. on Dec. 11, 2018.
