Driver who fled from police arrested

Before police turned and caught up with the speeding vehicle, it had already lost control and entered the ditch, and the driver had fled on foot

On Nov. 26, 2017, at 8:15 p.m. members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17 in the North Shore Township. Police observed a west bound motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

Before police turned and caught up with the speeding vehicle, it had already lost control and entered the ditch, and the driver had fled on foot.   

A short time later, the male driver was located and subsequently arrested.

Colin William Warus, 35 years of age, of Sudbury, Ont., was charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of motor vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Flight while pursued by a peace officer, contrary to section 249.1(1) of the CC
  • Speeding 1- 49 km/h over posted limit, contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor License Act (LLA)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, Ont. on Feb. 1, 2018.
