Driver charged during Thessalon area RIDE check

Police say the accused refused to comply with the mandatory alcohol screening demand

A driver was charged during a RIDE check near Thessalon on Monday evening.

A news release issued by East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) states that Darin Smith refused to comply with the mandatory alcohol screening demand and was arrested.

Full text of the OPP release follows:

HURON SHORES - On Dec. 27, 2021 at approximately 10:15 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere (RIDE) on Collver Road and Little Rapids Road north of Thessalon.

Police spoke to a vehicle driver who refused to comply with the mandatory alcohol screening (MAS). As a result, the driver was arrested and charged.

Darin Smith, 56 years old from Huron Shores, was charged with
    •    failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Feb. 3, 2022.
