Driver accused of fleeing Bruce Mines RIDE check in stolen vehicle: OPP

A driver from Garden River has been charged after allegedly fleeing from a RIDE check in Plummer Additional Township.

Police say on Dec. 26, officers were conducting a RIDE program on Highway 638 at Cloudslee Rd.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., police report observing a black car approach the RIDE check before suddenly stopping, conducting a three-point-turn, and driving eastbound onto Station Rd. at a high rate of speed. 

A short time later, police located the black car was parked on the roadway. Police say the driver had fled on foot and was located at 6:35 p.m. by the Emergency Response Team and the OPP Canine Unit running on Bruce St. in Bruce Mines.

The driver was arrested. 

Police say they determined the vehicle was stolen from a residence on Cloudslee Rd. Officers also say they located a stolen credit card and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine on the driver upon searching him.

As a result, Douglas Richard, 26, was charged with:

  • Two counts of failure to comply with release order - other to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and with
  • Two counts of driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice video bail in Blind River on Dec. 27, 2020 and was remanded into custody.

During the search in Bruce Mines for the suspect, police report that a set of footwear impressions were observed entering a property on Bruce St. That residence was searched for the driver. While searching the residence for the driver, police say they located two long gun pellet guns. Police say the owner of these guns was in breach of firearms conditions.

As a result, Donald Badgero, age 36 of Bruce Mines was charged with: fail to comply with release order, contrary to section 145(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Feb. 11, 2021.
