Disturbance call near Thessalon leads to impaired driving charges

Police say the accused 'attacked a homeowner for unknown reasons'

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a Johnson Township driver after it is alleged that he attacked a homeowner near Thessalon.

A news release issued today by East Algoma OPP states that officers responded to a disturbance call on Ansonia Road last evening.

The accused, 45-year-old Shaun Hutchinson, faces impaired-related charges as a result of the incident.

Full text of the OPP news release follows:

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Jan. 18, 2021 shortly after 9:45 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance on Ansonia Road in the Municipality of Huron Shores.

The investigation determined a car pulled into a driveway on Ansonia Road and the driver who appeared to be intoxicated, [allegedly] attacked the homeowner for unknown reasons. The homeowner pinned the driver down until police arrived.

Once on scene, police determined the driver had consumed alcohol and was arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Shaun Hutchinson, age 45 from Johnson Township, was charged with:
    •    Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1) of the CC; and with
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on March 4, 2021.

This charge marks the second driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the East Algoma Detachment area in 2021.

The OPP is reminding drivers that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. Reporting impaired driving is everyone's responsibility. Call 911 if you suspect an impaired driver.
