Collision near Bruce Mines leads to impaired charges for Sault driver

Police say they arrived on scene to find a car stuck in a snowbank

A 58-year-old Sault Ste. Marie resident faces multiple impaired charges after a collision earlier this week, East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated in a news release today.

Police responded to a motor vehicle collision near Bruce Mines just after 9:30 p.m., where they found a car stuck in a snowbank.

Police say they determined the driver was impaired by alcohol, and as a result, Shaun Fluke was arrested and faces multiple charges listed below.

The full release is as follows: 

PLUMMER ADDITIONAL TOWNSHIP - On March 15, 2022 shortly after 9:30 p.m., members from East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Concession Road 5 in Plummer Additional Township.

Police arrived on scene a short time later and observed a car stuck in a snowbank with the driver standing beside the vehicle. As the driver of the car was asking the officer for assistance in getting the car out of the snowbank, the officer determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment where further testing was conducted.

As a result of the investigation, Shaun Fluke, 58 years of age from Sault Ste. Marie, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC
  • Careless driving, contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 5, 2022. The accused was issued a 90-day administration drivers licence suspension and the car was impounded for seven days.
