8 p.m. update:

The Algoma District School Board (ADSB) advises that Elliot Lake Secondary School will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, February 28th, and that classes will resume as normally scheduled.

A thorough search of the school, conducted by officers, school administration and a canine unit, did not result in any suspicious package or object being found. The OPP will continue their investigation into the call and ADSB asks that anyone who may have relevant information about this incident to please call the OPP.

The Algoma District School Board once again thanks students, staff and parents for their cooperation and understanding today.

4:10 p.m. update:

The Algoma District School Board has advised parents of students at Elliot Lake Secondary School that there was a delay in the police investigation this afternoon due to resources having to travel from other locations. The investigation and search of the building is continuing; however, ADSB anticipates that they will be unable to confirm classes for tomorrow until tonight.

An update through the Board’s messaging system will be forthcoming sometime this evening. Again, we thank students, staff, parents and community members for their patience and understanding.

11:20 a.m. update:

The Algoma District School Board is providing an update on the bomb threat situation at Elliot Lake Secondary School. The OPP and representatives from the bomb squad are conducting a thorough search of the building which is expected to take most of the day.

The Board wishes to thank parents, students, staff and the community for their cooperation. Further updates will be provided when available.

10 a.m. original:

Algoma District School Board (ADSB) has confirmed that Elliot Lake Secondary School (ELSS) is closed due to a bomb threat to the school.  All students and staff have been evacuated.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers are on site at Elliot Lake Secondary School and have secured the building.  

We will update as more information becomes available.

ELLIOT LAKE - The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently responding to a threatening phone call complaint that was received at around 7:45 a.m. at the Elliot Lake Secondary School (ELSS) located at 303 Mississauga Avenue. The caller indicated that there was an explosive device in the school.

The OPP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) and the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) have been called in to assist. The East Algoma OPP is working closely with school officials to bring this event to a safe conclusion.

The school is currently closed and all occupants have been evacuated. Buses have been cancelled.  For further information related to the evacuation, please contact the Algoma District School Board or Principal Rick Juuti.

The OPP has closed HiIlside Drive South at Mississauga Avenue and Mississauga Avenue at Dieppe Avenue. The OPP is asking residents to please stay away from the area.
