Blind River man with slingshot charged with assault

BLIND RIVER - On Oct. 25, 2017, shortly after 4 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment responded to a complaint where a male was hit with a small steel ball on Woodward Avenue in the Town of Blind River.

An owner of an apartment building was making repairs to a door when he was hit with a ball bearing and another had missed him, hitting his building. Investigation determined the ball bearings were fired from a slingshot. The shots came from an apartment across from the complaint's building where a male was observed near an open window. Police attended the apartment and located a slingshot and ball bearings. 

As a result of the investigation, Edward Martel, 54 years of age from Blind River, Ont., was charged with:

  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Dec. 7, 2017.
