Two arrested after body of premature baby found in Montreal-area dumpster

LAVAL, Que. — Two people are facing criminal charges after police discovered the body of a premature baby in a dumpster north of Montreal Monday evening.

A 36-year-old woman was charged Tuesday with neglecting to obtain assistance in childbirth and with concealing the body of child.

A 44-year-old man was also charged with concealing the body of a child.

Officers and paramedics were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Monday and discovered the remains in a dumpster behind an apartment building in the Montreal suburb of Laval.

Paramedics pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

Laval police spokeswoman Julie Marois said earlier Tuesday the baby was born about three months premature but an autopsy will confirm the stage of development and chances of survival outside the womb.
