Small plane lands on toll highway north of Toronto: police

MARKHAM, ONTARIO, CANADA — Police say a small plane landed on a toll highway north of Toronto on Wednesday morning.

Provincial police Const. Kerry Schmidt says the plane made an emergency landing on Highway 407 just a few minutes after taking off from the Buttonville Airport in Markham, Ont.

He says the small plane, which was carrying a pilot and an instructor, had suffered an engine failure, despite having been recently inspected.

Schmidt says the aircraft landed safely on a wide stretch of highway that wasn't blocked by power lines.

He says no cars were affected by the emergency landing.

The airplane was undamaged, and nobody was injured.

"It's something you don't see very often," Schmidt says.
