SMITH, Robert John (Bob)

Posted

Passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2003 first thing in the morning. This mighty iron worker (local 786) is really retired now. Cancer sure cut into his fishing time. Born February 9, 1937 to Lewis and Rena Smith – in Sault Ste. Marie – in the elevator of the General Hospital. In his home life with family, Uncle Bob was always a welcome sight. He had no wife of children of his own (that we knew of) but this did not stop him from being an influence on all his nieces, nephews, and later his great nieces and nephews. His parents and brother Burton and wife Irma of Steward, B.C. predeceased him. Loved by Chrissy, Burton, Karen and Kenny and all their spouses and children. A brother Maurice and his wife Kay in South Mountain, Ontario survive him. Loved by their kids Peter, Darlene, Michael and Robert plus their spouses and kids. Also survived by sister Frances Daveikis (husband late Victor) in Azilda, Ontario. Loved by the children of that union, John, Polly, Derrick, Dillon, Melissa and Victor Junior plus their spouses and children. Having Uncle Bob stay at your house for a while meant that there would be some fun times ahead. Whether he was repairing a car or a roof, working shut downs or helping a friend or family member he always made time for his loved ones. He really wanted you to believe that he was a tough guy, but those that really knew him knew he had a heart as big as a truck. He also had deep pockets and would lose at poker with his nieces and nephews but not his brothers or sister. You could always find him with a package of Export A in his front shirt pocket and a paper back novel in his back pants pocket right beside his plumber butt. He would do pretty much anything for some hot chicken and spaghetti and some cold Molson Export. He wanted nothing in the way of a funeral. He didn’t want to be shown in a parlour with weeping friends and family. He’ll be cremated and his ashes will be buried in Sault Ste. Marie with his mom and dad. Tonight though, we’re having chicken and spaghetti and we’ll raise a bottle of Molson Ex and toast the man we loved. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the East Hall at the Water Tower Inn on Monday, October 27, 2003 from 11 am until 1 pm to pay a simple tribute to this man. A luncheon will be served. His ashes will be intered at Greenwood Cemetery afterwards.
