It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bernadette Bridget Smith.

Bernadette passed away at ARCH on Sunday February 27, in her 59th year of life.

She will be forever missed and fondly remembered by her supporter, Pat, and her loving son, Anthony Silvano, who was her absolute pride and joy and the light of her life.

She is also survived by her biological daughter, Sue Pasternak, who she was able to proudly introduce to her family when they developed a special bond in recent years.

Bernadette will be deeply missed by the entire Smith clan, her mother Bernadette and her late father William, and siblings Bill (Roxanne), Angela (Dave), late Patrick (Sandy), Isabel (late Dave), Maureen (Dave), Tom, Gerard, Kieran (Heather), Brian (Ruth) and David (Patti).

She will be sorely missed by her best friend Pamela Hall, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends and of course her grand-fur babies, Jaydee and Bo.

Bernadette joins her father Bill, her brother Patrick and her dear nephew Christopher in heaven.

To put it simply, Bernadette was easy to like, easy to love and truly fun to be around. She knew when to lend a listening ear or a helping hand and would always put the needs of others before her own.

While we will all greatly miss her kindness, her humor, always hearing her say ‘God bless’, and of course her inherently selfless nature, we take great comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain.

Bernadette leaves behind a legacy of compassion, love and laughter that will always be remembered.

The Smith and Silvano families would like to sincerely thank the caring staff and volunteers at ARCH, who were fantastic during Bernadette’s five-month stay. The ARCH team made Bernadette’s time in hospice as comfortable, dignified and peaceful as possible and for that her family is eternally grateful.

Bernadette’s loved ones would also like to express their utmost gratitude to Dr. Rassouli at Sault Area Hospital, who provided her with exceptional care over the last nine years.

A private family service was held at O’Sullivan Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 2.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bernadette’s name can be made to ARCH and the Canadian Cancer Society (Payable to or online).
