(December 3, 1929 - May 9, 2021).  With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Amelia at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice in the final hours of Mother's Day, May 9, 2021.  She was predeceased in 2018 by her beloved husband Fred, was the loving and dearly loved mother of Elaine Pitcher, and was a much loved second mother to her son-in-law Dave Galotta.

The daughter of the late Fred and Anne Prokop and older sister of the late Lloyd and late Stan Prokop, Amelia is survived by her sister-in-law June.  She was also predeceased by Fred's brothers, sisters and their spouses: Clarice Mathieu (Lyle Errington, Charles Mathieu); Roy (Luella), Alberta Elliott (Dave Moss, Leslie Elliott), Gwen Callison (Grover), and George.  Amelia will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Amelia grew up in Steelton and in the summers enjoyed playing basketball and softball at the nearby schoolyard, and skated on the school rink throughout the winter, coming home only for meals or to warm-up.  After high school she worked at Algoma Steel in the Payroll Department until her marriage to Fred in 1956.  They shared almost sixty-two years together before Fred's passing.

Amelia was an amazing mother - her true calling - and she excelled in creating a warm, nurturing, and happy home filled with much love, laughter, learning …and great food! She enjoyed bowling, cross-country skiing and was a tremendous knitter, always with a project on the go.  Amelia was happiest when spending time with Fred, Elaine and Dave. She so enjoyed being together whether it was at the cottage, or in Dunedin, Florida, when traveling to the Maritimes or short jaunts to Traverse City, and perhaps most of all when gathered at home for Sunday dinners.

She leaves behind camp friends of over 60 years at MacKay Bay, and also her treasured and long-time friends Barbara Johnson, Cecilia St. Germain, Leone Campbell and Gary Burns and we are so appreciative of their acts of kindness over the years.  Thanks also to nieces Bev Rollins, Linda Infanti and Barb Worthington for the notes, cards and gifts that always brought a smile.

We would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Extendicare Mapleview where Amelia resided for the past fourteen months, especially Anna Marie, Liane, Audra, Denise, and Vicky, and to also thank the caring and compassionate staff at ARCH for making Mom's last days peaceful and comfortable.

Our most heartfelt thanks go to the entire Renal Dialysis team at Sault Area Hospital, both current and retired, for the excellent care and compassion provided to Amelia over the years.  Special thanks to Shirley Pulkkinen for her kindness, guidance and support and a very special thank you to Dr. David Berry and Dr. Mir Shafiee for giving us the gift of an extra 11 years with Mom.

A private funeral service will be held at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East 705-759-2522), followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery.  Those wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to consider Amelia's favourite charities Sault Area Hospital Foundation - Renal Dialysis Fund or ARCH (payable by cheque or online).  Please visit the Arthur Funeral Home website obituaries to leave memories and condolences as a keepsake for the family.
