January 11, 1942 to June 21, 2021

Peacefully at ARCH with beloved husband Phil and daughter Sharon Abrams at her bedside. Mother also to Elsa Punch (Chris). Nana to Michael and Brett Bishop. Survived by sisters Brenda, Grace, Pearl, Valerie and Carol and brothers Colin and Keith all in the UK. VERY SPECIAL friend of Sharon and Steve Poluk.

Elsa travelled widely before emigrating to Canada and becoming a Canadian citizen. Her working life included at Breton House and in the architectural office of D. Perry Short (where she first met Phil). She consistently lobbied for improvement to workers’ rights, especially for women. At Community Living Algoma she became president of CUPE Local 1880 and was a fightback co-ordinator during the Mike Harris rollbacks.

Her misfortune of contracting breast cancer never deterred her vitality and upon retirement she pursued her passion. As "garden mistress" her handiwork remains on display. Elsa did not focus on her own plight but was forever concerned about the misfortune of others.

The family wishes is grateful to the many people and organizations who assisted during her non-ambulatory period including: Firefighter Richard Bishop who was a godsend by ensuring outings away from home were manageable; all local LHIN staff who lessened the mental and physical stress related to her disability; Rob Sharpe at R&T Mobility who facilitated acquisition of necessary equipment; the PSW's of CBI services whose compassionate care helped her through each day and to the Public Health nurses that attended especially the effervescent Cindy. The family will be forever grateful to Doctor Karen Booth and to the incredible staff at ARCH as well as a special PSW who raised Elsa's spirits every time she sang "You Are My Sunshine" to her. Daughter Sharon’s insistence that happiness be the order of every day made Elsa's unfortunate circumstance easier to bear.

Per Elsa's wishes, her funeral will be family only, but if donations are offered in her memory, please direct them to ARCH.

A long-awaited glorious reunion with Mom and Dad is now hers to enjoy and perhaps her deceased pets will fill her with joy.
