It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce at the age of 92. She was wife to the late Bernerd Mertes. Proud mother of Ted Mertes (Marian) and Paul Mertes (Linda). Beloved grandmother to Michael (Devyn), David, William, and Liisa. Great grandmother to Elliott. Sister of the late Aileen Hadden and the late Elsie Mole. Sister-in-law of the late Elaine Gall, the late John Mertes (Pat), Ann Mertes, the late Peggy Wansbrough (late Bob), the late Lorraine Owens (late Bob), the late Stan Mole, and the late Bill Mertes (late Terry).

Joyce worked as a Grade 1 teacher in Sault Ste. Marie’s school system for many years, and then as one of its pioneering teacher-librarians, where she was able to impart her love for books to students from Grades 1 - 8. She was an active advocate for the teaching profession, and served as President of the FWTAO in Sault Ste. Marie, and as a Regional Director for Northern Ontario in the provincial body. Later, she served as a director and vice president for the Retired Women Teachers Association of Ontario.

Throughout her busy career, she found time to complete her Bachelor of Arts and her Masters in Education degrees, and was a proud member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority.

Joyce was a very active member at Central United Church, including its choir, UCW, and McDougall Club.

Friends and family are invited to visit Arthur Funeral home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E., 705-759-2522) on Thursday June 2, 2022 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A service will be held the following day on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 11:00 at Central United Church. A light lunch will be held at the church after the service before proceeding to Richard's Landing for the Inurnment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations (made payable by cheque or online) to Central United Church Memorial Fund, ARCH, or the Alzheimer's Society would be greatly appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff at Highview Residences Cooper Cottage for their care of Joyce, particularly in her final days.  Please visit www.arthurfuneralhome.com to leave a message of condolence as a keepsake for the family.
