MATTHEWS-NELSON, Diane Bio

It is with extreme sadness that the family of Diane Matthews-Nelson announce her sudden and unexpected passing on July 21, 2021 in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 73.  Diane’s generosity, kindness and compassion will be missed. She lived a life of dignity and grace that was admired by those who knew her best. She was a loving and devoted wife to Brian Nelson for 33 years.  Cherished best friend and adoring mother to Paul Tulloch (Sue) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Stephanie Martinez (Jim Bennitt) of Chicago, Illinois. Loving step-mother to Phil Nelson of Sudbury, Ontario.  Loving and proud grandmother (Memaw) to her very special “Angel Baby'' Lauren Tulloch of Charlotte, North Carolina. Diane was always so proud to hear of Lauren’s many academic accomplishments and dreams for her future. She was looking forward to attending games and watching her play hockey for Aquinas College (Grand Rapids, Michigan) in person.  Loving and devoted daughter to Gloria Matthews (El Paso, Texas) and late Stephen Matthews.  Sister to Robert Matthews (Debbie) of Stanwood, Washington and Stanley Matthews (Jessie) of Austin, Texas.  Special friend and sister-in-law to Brenda Scornaiencki (late Tony) and Chris Nelson (Lori).  Daughter-in-law of the late Clara Jean (late Paul Nelson and the late Ron Laplante).  Diane will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and forever missed by her canine companion, Holly.  Diane was born in 1947 in Los Angeles, California and was raised in El Paso, Texas. In 1988 she married Brian and moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Brian and Diane loved spending their summers at “The Point” on St. Joseph Island where many family and friends from near and far gathered over the years. Diane's hospitality was always superb.  Diane will be forever remembered as an animal lover. She was Sault Ste. Marie’s greatest supporter of the “Cause for Paws” Dog Walk that was hosted each year by the SSM Humane Society. For more than 20 years, friends and family near and far awaited her call every summer asking for their support.  A Memorial Celebration of Diane’s loving life will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions in Diane’s name may be made to The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society or NSHN North Shore Hospital Network (Auxiliary Matthew’s Site) [email protected] Both organizations were so very important to Diane.
