July 24, 1946 - February 25, 2020

William Matthew Latham, known to friends and family as Bill, age 73, of Havilland Bay left the Soo area this Tuesday the only way he would ever be inclined to do so - by escaping the mortal realm entirely. He is survived by his patient wife, Patti who was the love of his life for 46 years. The two have lived a happy, simple life centered at the camp, filled with good friends, family, food, drinks, and many bonfires. He is also survived by his daughter Ruth and her husband Jeff, his son Matt and his grandchildren Penelope and Gloria all of whom were great sources of pride and love in his life. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Madonna, cousins Brian and Gary, nieces, and many, many good friends Bill taught at Bawating, the Alternative School, and White Pines where he imparted knowledge of math, science, and art into the brains of countless young people. He ended his career as librarian at White Pines and volunteered with Friends of the Library sitting on the Library Board of the Sault Public Library for years. In his retirement, winter vacations to Texas brought new friends and great joy. He enjoyed many things: sailing, white wine, gymnastics, his wife Patti’s cooking, white wine, home, always having a project, good friends, two step dancing, the blues, Texas, and white wine. He was a renowned doer of projects; he was the original recycler and loved nothing more than to take someone’s trash and make something beautiful and functional out of it. He was everyone’s go-to for suggestions about how a project should go. Heartfelt thanks go to the many kind doctors who tried to heal and comfort him and to the exceptional nurses at the Sault Hospital who provided much more than nursing care to Bill, and who established a peaceful and compassionate environment while on his way out of this life. A Celebration of Life will be postponed and held in the summer. Donations to the Sault Area Hospital or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 215 St. James St, 705-759-8456
