HURLEY, Leonard Waldron

We are completely heartbroken.
It is with great shock and sadness that the family of Leonard Waldron Hurley announce the sudden and unexpected passing at Sault Area Hospital on September 26, 2020. In his 83rd year, Len was born December 13, 1936, on the homestead a home birth in Echo Bay, Algoma District, otherwise known as Hurley Ville. He was born to Thomas Lester Hurley (Echo Bay) and Helen Jane “Nellie” (nee Waldron) Hurley (England). Grandparents from (Ireland, Scotland) and the Hurley family roots that can be traced back to Black Beard the pirate.
Len began his own branch of the Hurley line legacy tree where he married the late Phyllis (nee Beckett) Hurley, the wife, and love of his life. The sun rose and set on his wife Phyllis. And for Len, family was everything. They are predeceased by their son, the late Fred, survived by his wife (Cathy), and their children, Richard (Melissa) and Pam (James). Along with many great children on this branch. He will be missed by his son, Albert (Rebecca), and Len's granddaughter, Brittney Hurley.
Len’s brother, the late Dr. Richard Lester Hurley of Bozeman, Montana, Len’s sister, Helen Pottorff (late Don) of Florida. His many nieces and nephews, Debbie, Susan, Jeff, Colleen and great-nieces, and nephews all of Florida. The baby of the branch, Len's brother, Thomas Hurley (Marilyn), and their children, Raymond, Robbie, Ricki, Royann, Donna and many great-nieces and nephews.
 
Len worked at the Algoma steel plant in the transportation part and stores area, while working at the plant he and his wife Phyllis owned and operated Hurley's Variety on Korah Road, a confectionary store and later it became Pelican Pete's Restaurant.
 
We would like to acknowledge the many people who assisted and tended a hand to Len. We would especially like to thank and acknowledge Len’s best friend for many years, Richard Demers for all his help over the years.
We would also like to thank all the many caregivers, nurses, and doctors who attended to Len, especially Dr. L. Fera, and for all the health care providers, nurses, and PSW’s who cared for Len over the years, we are truly grateful.
Dad, Poppa, we will always keep you in our hearts and hold onto many good memories. We love you forever and always and although you are no longer by our side you will always be in our hearts forever, you are now free of your earthly bonds and chains. Soar high above, until we meet again. You will always be our hero and our angel and our best friend you are the best father, grandfather and brother anyone could ask for.
In keeping with Len’s wishes, there will be no service. Cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in Len’s honor or memorial donations may be made to Para Med (LHIN) or a home health care service provider. Arrangements entrusted to O’Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 215 St. James St, 705-759-8456. A big thank you to the staff and owners at O'Sullivan for all the help and support you have shown Len's family in this difficult time.
