James Noel Hughes

(December 25, 1932 – January 31, 2018) - It is with profound sadness that the family of James Noel Hughes announce his passing on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 in his 86th year. Noel passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.  He is survived by his loving wife Jean (nee Speers) his children, Cathy (Charlie Edward), Diane (Ron Toffan), Brian (Lisette) and his treasured 9 grandchildren, Sarah, Charlie Jr., Samantha, Angela, Rob, Brian Jr., Steven, Hayden and Ben. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Isobel O’Neill, Gwendie Irwin, Winnie Hughes, and brother-in-law Bobby Speers and by his many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Martha, and by his 7 siblings, Francis, Madge, Jack, Evelyn, Billy, Eric, and Maurice.

Noel grew up in Ballymena, Northern Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1952 and eventually met the love of his life, Jean, in Toronto in 1958.  Ironically they were from the same home town in Ireland.  They married in 1959, sharing 58 devoted years together. After serving in the RCAF, and with the Metro Toronto Police Force, in 1971 he became a Provincial Officer with the Ministry of Environment transferring to Barrie in 1974 where he and his family settled and planted permanent roots.

Noel enjoyed working in his garage, reading, woodworking, telling stories of his past adventures, and especially loved spending time with family.  A treasured memory is the family Caribbean vacation in 2013, affectionately remembered as “FAM JAM” where all 19 of his Hughes Clan gathered to enjoy fun and happy adventures together.  Of special note, he was a wonderful singer and was often asked to entertain at gatherings and parties… especially St. Patrick’s Day, as his signature song was ‘Danny Boy’.

Noel was a very strong man (stubborn!) and endured so many illnesses over the last 15 years, suffering from cardiac disease, and was also a three time cancer survivor.  Until the very end, he was well-known for his strong and sincere handshake.  A role model for many people, he truly depicted the meaning of FATHER.  Loved and respected by so many relatives and friends alike, at home and abroad. Many have referred to him as our “Ironman” and a “Giant of a family man”.

Very special thanks and utmost gratitude and appreciation to Dr. David Boushy, Jennifer McNeil, and the entire staff at ‘Amica at Barrie’, who showered us with never ending care and support, and eased our minds throughout this journey, helping Noel throughout his transition.  At Noel’s request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.

You were a special Husband, Dad, Grampa, Brother and Uncle who we laughed with, learned from, leaned on, and loved dearly.  You have left us with the best memories!

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to the Salvation Army or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
