Well, the world has one more light shining from above us, Tiziano, Tiz, as he was affectionately known, 85, of Sault Ste Marie passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
Tiz was someone who radiated life and joy while on this earth. He would brighten up any room with his smile and essence as he embraced life on a daily basis. For Tiziano, life was to be lived with a clear sense of priorities meaning he lived in the present and never in judgement. We can never recall the man gossiping and he rebuked those who did. Some thought this to be too simplistic a philosophy to live by, but it served him well as he was always generous with his time and he always said he had no regrets. We shall always think of him when we hear the song “My Way”.
Tiziano was born in Valdagno, Italy in 1937. Life during and post war years was challenging especially with the death of his mother, Armida Catani when he was still a child. His father, Aldo Germanili, was a true guiding force until he passed away prematurely in 1962. He maintained good relationships with all of his siblings: late Tiziana D’Elia (Phillipo), late Antonio Germanili (Olga), Carmen Germanili, and Martino Germanili. In 1956, Tiziano immigrated to Canada, landing in New Brunswick and together with a close friend now of over 60 years, Gino Sartor, they made their way due west, where his travels were suspended upon meeting the love of his life of 64 years, Tosca Germanili. They shared a life built on a strong foundation of deep and enduring love, where Tosca supported his joie de vivre and together, they made an enviable team. They truly had unique gifts that seemed to intertwine and work beautifully together, be it with family, friends or business. Together they raised two daughters, Florence Bortoluzzi (Robert Frasson) and Sara Greco (Anthony). All through their upbringing Tiziano shared much wisdom, insight, perspective and humour. His words will undoubtedly echo in the heads and hearts of his daughters for many years and generations to come. Speaking of generations, they say that the jewels of parenthood are grandchildren, and Tiziano truly found great joy as a Nonno to Justin Germanili (Carolina), Sofia Bortoluzzi, Jamey Lyn Dubreuil (Justin) and Matthew Greco. As they were all spaced out a bit, he got to enjoy each of them to the fullest. If grandkids are jewels, great grandkids are gemstones and Tiziano was blessed with 3 little boys, Cruz Germanili, Cash Germanili and the newest addition Jack Dubreuil. Tiziano will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and friends in Canada and abroad.
Tiziano was one of those self-made men not interested in a gold watch and a pension. He was an entrepreneur and was a natural at learning many trades. He started as a drywall artist where some of his work on ceilings can still be found in homes in the Soo. He learned every trade and owned his own general contracting company. He was always quietly proud when driving by some of the homes and projects he did. His natural abilities extended to physical pursuits – he loved soccer, squash, cycling, swimming and his longest past time, golf! You’ll see his picture on the wall of the Root River Golf and Country Club when in 1964 he was the club champion. Way to go Tiz!
One of his greatest joys was buying a home in Port Charlotte, Florida, which he enjoyed, for 45 years. This was a place where the entire family over the years shared some of their best memories together. In later years they were fortunate to be able to avoid the Soo winters and spend 5 months a year there where he was happiest cycling, doing yard work, swimming and enjoying many a Happy Hour with the numerous friends they made there.
Tiz loved people. Many will remember the open-door policy they had, where you just walked in and a plate and glass would be put out as if they were expecting you. He loved food – perhaps even fashioned himself a food critic, but food symbolized family and friendship and it was his conduit to connecting with people.
Sadly, Tiziano passed away, not as he lived, for he was afflicted with Dementia. It is indeed a cruel disease robbing a person and his family of time and dignity. We will, however, remember him as he was and will forever be reminded of the fine example that he left us with . . . . that the measure of a life is in the DASH (1937 – 2023). It’s the dash in the middle that’s important.

A final tribute to all the nurses, PSW’s, doctors and staff who helped with Tiziano’s care during the last three years, and especially his final days. You shared your pizza with him, your compassion, and now our shared grief. Our family extends our most heartfelt gratitude which cannot be captured in words – thank you.
A private Celebration of Life will be held, as Tiziano had wished.
