Fred Falls

A final snowflake fell for Fred on January 8, 2021.  With great sorrow, the family of Fred Falls advises that he passed away in the early morning in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at the age of 73.  Born on Manitoulin Island on Wednesday, August 21, 1947 to Clifford Andrew and Marjorie (nee Noland) Falls, Fred was the second eldest of five boys.  A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Fred is survived by his two children, Andrew (wife Beverly) and Kathryn; three grandchildren, Makayla (husband Zoran), Kelsey (fiancé Taylor), and Nathan; and two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Luka.  Fred is also survived by three brothers, Arnold, Bruce and Hughie and predeceased by his youngest brother Murray.  Fred will be missed by many nieces and nephews.

Fred spent his youngest years on the Island, later moving to the mainland with his family.  Fred had a keen mind for Chemistry, Mathematics and logic.  He earned a college diploma in Chemistry and was recruited to work for Dupont in North Bay.  In the early days of something called the “computer”, Fred developed an interest and admirable aptitude for computer programming.  He fondly remembered teaching computing courses in college where he was able to memorize every one of his students’ first names before the end of the first class.  He developed programs for Dupont and later turned this new skillset into a computer programming business for most of his career.

Fred returned to the North and called the Thessalon area his home for the last twenty years.  Widely known as a fantastic chef, in his retirement, Fred provided catering services for many local events in Northern Ontario.  His meat pies and “turducken” were heavenly.  Fred also volunteered his time with the Thessalon Lions Club, serving most recently as their President.

Fred was a loving father. His daughter called him her best friend and she will deeply miss their daily conversations.  Fred adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren as much as they adored him. He always went out of his way to make their visits to the cottage extra special, including creating fun activities for them and cooking their favourite meals and sweets. In the evenings, rummy and euchre were the favourites and always after animal rides. We will always remember his laugh, quick wit and generous spirit.  We love you and send you off with warm wishes on your next adventure.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Fred’s life and burial at Pine Grove Cemetery will be held at a later date with details announced closer to the event
