(July 13, 1941 - December 20, 2021)

With great sadness, we are to announce the passing of Apostolos "Paul" Cavalaris. Born in Greece during the German occupation in July of 1941, he grew up playing soccer and training for a boxing career. After leaving the army, he made his way to Canada with his cousin to join 3 of his older brothers. Paul was an avid gardener and outdoorsman, later in his life one could see Paul fishing by the Holiday Inn in the St. Mary's River and at the locks. Paul worked tirelessly on his property making it his home; it had grapevines to sit under, fish ponds and amazing flower arrangements. He had, at one point, chickens, rabbits, turkeys and pigeons as well as a massive vegetable garden. Paul loved to tell a good story; some were about his time in the Army, others were about his wilderness travels and encounters with animals and of course his many fishing trips with family and friends. With soft spoken words his eyes would grow large as he spoke intensely. He would tell stories to all that would listen, his sometimes loosely interpreted stories of great escapades and feats were enjoyed by all. He captured ones imagination and entertained even the most sceptic of listeners. Because of Paul's physical stature and speedy right hook, those that did disrespect him or his loved ones met with more than they expected. Respect was important to Paul, he gave respect where it was due. He did not like loud mouths or bullies and would always defend the underdog. Paul retired early from the Steel Plant and enjoyed over 30 years of retirement. He is survived by his wife, Miriam of almost 50 years, his step-son Terry Horner and his Son-in-law Danny McBride. Sadly, he was predeceased by his step-daughter, Debbie McBride and step-son Robbie Horner. He was also predeceased by all 6 of his brothers (Paul was the youngest). Most know locally, was Nick "Nick the Greek" Cavalaris from Sault Ste. Marie. Paul will be missed by many of his in-laws, Sonny MacIntosh, Joyce Gaudet, Wes MacIntosh and the their families. Loving Grandfather to, Heather and Cody McBride, Marty McBride and Jesse and Sadie Horner, all miss their Papa also. A big thanks to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses for all the selfless help they provided in the last few years of his life. Family friend Dawn was instrumental in Paul care during Covid and his illness making sure his needs were met. Darryl and Chrissy also assisted weekly. Granddaughter Heather McBride gave her time assisting Nana and Papa during these trying times. Sonny MacIntosh also quietly helped with many, many things that needed attention, they could always count on Mac. Last but not least the neighbours around Paul, who selflessly gave hours and hours of help from lawn cutting to snow removal, to food, running of errands and kindness. Knowing that you had a watchful eye for the elderly was a comfort to this son, living in B.C.  If I missed anyone I do apologize and thank all their friends and family who visited and helped.

Due to current Covid restrictions, no funeral service will be held at this time, a service of remembrance will take place at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E., 705-759-2522).
