U Sports Roundup: Merchant leads Western in thrashing of Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. — Chris Merchant threw for 348 yards and six touchdown passes as the Vanier Cup champion Western Mustangs downed the Waterloo Warriors 67-7 on Saturday in U Sports football action.

Cole Majoros and Brett Ellerman caught three TDs apiece and Cedric Joseph and Kevin John each ran in a score as Western improved to 4-0 on the season while extending its win streak to 16 games.

Majoros was the game's top receiver with 123 yards, including one 61-yard catch.

Warriors quarterback Tre Ford was 8 for 16 with a touchdown pass and an interception.

Waterloo (3-2) was coming off a stunning 34-32 victory over the perennial powerhouse Laurier Golden Hawks last weekend, the Warriors' first win over their cross-town rivals since 2002.

They have not beaten the Mustangs since 2001.

TORONTO — Daniel Diodati's 99-yard punt return for a touchdown cut Toronto's (0-4) deficit to six with fewer than six minutes remaining, but Carleton (4-1) hit two straight field goals to hold on for the win.

GUELPH, Ont. — Theo Landers tossed two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and Guelph (2-3) put up 18 points in the frame, but couldn't complete the comeback over Queen's (3-2).

VANCOUVER — Quarterback Adam Sinagra found Alex Basilis on a 10-yard pass for the game-winning touchdown with just over four minutes left as Calgary (3-0) stayed undefeated with a win over UBC (1-2).
