Laurentian University axes hockey, swimming amid financial problems

SUDBURY, ONT. — Laurentian University is cutting its hockey and swimming Voyageurs teams because of the school's financial woes.

The moves are part of the university's restructuring after filing for creditor protection this winter.

The Sudbury, Ont., school will continue to compete in Ontario University Athletics in men's and women's basketball, soccer, cross-country running track and field, golf, cross-country skiing, curling, rowing and men's baseball, provost and academic vice-president Marie-Josée Berger said Wednesday in a statement.

The decision was made to "further align its financial resources," Berger said.
