Canada Selects rugby side beaten handily by French club side Clermont

ISSOIRE, France — Former French club champion Clermont Auvergne thumped the Canadian Selects 54-15, handing the touring Canadian rugby side its second loss in as many weeks.

Kyle Baillie opened the scoring and Guiseppe du Toit added a penalty for Canada but the French side hit back with six first-half tries to lead 40-8 at the break Friday.

Lucas Rumball scored a try for Canada in the second half with Clermont adding two converted tries of its own for the convincing win.

The largely domestic Canadian side, coached by Kingsley Jones, lost 47-17 to reigning French club champions Castres last weekend. Both Castres and Clermont are preparing for the French Top 14 season.

Most of the Canadian team head back to Calgary for the third and fourth rounds of the Canadian Rugby Championships.
