CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders re-signed running back/returner Roy Finch and linebacker Deron Mayo on Tuesday.
The deal will see Finch, the CFL's top special-teams player and a league all-star last year, remain under contract with Calgary through the 2019 season. He was scheduled to become a free agent later Tuesday.
"Roy has established himself as an elite returner in this league and I'm very pleased that he is remaining with the red and white," Calgary president/GM John Hufnagel said in a statement. "I look forward to another great season from Roy on special teams in addition to his contributions on offence as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield."
Finch returned 73 punts for a club-record 1,200 yards and three TDs last year while adding 26 kickoff returns for 696 yards. He also ran for 114 yards on 21 carries and had 18 catches for 133 yards along with a two-point convert.
"To everyone in the Stamps family, I'm so excited to be coming back for another two years and to get back to chasing that Grey Cup," said Finch. "I love Stampeders pride and everything this organization stands for.
"These last two years with the "Roy has established himself as an elite returner in this league and I'm very pleased that he is remaining with the Red and White," said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. "I look forward to another great season from Roy on special teams in addition to his contributions on offence as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield." Stamps have been a crazy, amazing ride and I'm looking forward to even more amazing things in the next two years."
Mayo has spent six seasons with the Stampeders but only played a single game in 2017 after sustaining a knee injury.
Hufnagel said Mayo is still working on rehabilitating his knee and hopes he can return to the field in 2018.
"He has been an excellent player and strong leader for us and his return would provide us with a tremendous boost," said Hufnagel. "We will re-assess Deron's medical status prior to the start of training camp."
Mayo was a member of Calgary's Grey Cup-winning team in 2014 and has played 87 career games with the Stampeders.
Later in the day, the Stampeders also acquired defensive back and special-teamer Adam Berger.
A former Grey Cup champion in 2014 with the Stampeders, Berger played with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2017.
Over 71 games in his CFL career, Berger has had 19 defensive tackles, 23 special teams tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, three knockdowns and one blocked punt.
"We obviously are very familiar with Adam from his previous time here and we're pleased to have him back," said Hufnagel. "He provides depth on defence and will also be a valuable addition to our special-teams units."
