NEWS RELEASE

ALS CANADA

*************************
The Community of Sault Ste. Marie will join together again this year walking in solidarity to raise funds to support ALS families in the WALK for ALS.

ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative terminal disease.

With no cure, or treatment available, patients affected experience gradual paralyses throughout the body as the nerve cells that control movement die.

Eventually, the disease kills because it impacts the patient’s ability to breathe.

Currently there are 2,500-3,000 Canadians living with ALS.

Every year 1,000 people will die because of this disease and 1,000 will be newly diagnosed.

With a lifespan of only two to five years, there is an urgency to accelerate finding a treatment for ALS and help families manage the emotional and physical transitions this disease inflicts on people living with ALS.

The ALS Societies across Canada, organize the WALK for ALS, with the help of hundreds of volunteers across Canada.

The money raised goes towards investing in the ALS Canada Research Program, which funds top ALS researchers nationwide.

Forty percent of the proceeds generated provide support services and equipment to help Canadians living with ALS maintain a quality of life as long as possible.

The WALK for ALS will be held in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at The Roberta Bondar Park, 65 Foster Drive.

The WALK begins at 11 a.m. with the goal to raise $17,000.

The public can register for this WALK For ALS or any of the 32 WALKS taking place across Ontario at www.walkforals.ca.

About ALS

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease where the nerve cells that control your muscles die.

The ‘living wires’ which connect the brain to the muscles degenerate, leading to a loss of mobility, loss of speech and eventually impact the ability to breathe.

ALS is terminal. There is no treatment or cure.
