BREAKING AWAY

*************************
Breaking Away is a not-for-profit organization that brings to reality the vision of several local families who saw that their dependent adult children needed to continue to develop and maintain their skills beyond the currently offered level of secondary education.

They believed that their children should have a purposeful life, a place to go to develop peer relationships, an opportunity to explore and participate in the community, and to be supported and encouraged to meet their full potential.

Breaking Away has since expanded to become an invaluable resource in the community, operating every weekday (noon until 5 p.m.) at the Mount Saint Joseph Learning Centre.

Our unique initiative is driven by one important mission: to ensure adults with developmental disabilities who have completed high school continue to grow and learn in a manner that maximizes their potential.

Breaking Away offers the opportunity to expand academic learning, to maintain skills already possessed, to enhance the learning and practice of important life skills (food preparation, cleaning, shopping, personal hygiene, etc), to participate in recreational and leisure activities that are enjoyable (yoga, gym club, library, swimming, meditation, bowling, etc.) and to develop meaningful friendships and interpersonal skills.

Breaking Away is currently accepting new students for the fall.

The program could be offered to those interested in full-time or part-time programming at a rate of $40 per day.

For more information, please contact Amanda Gilbraith at 705-575-3355 or visit our website www.breakingawayssm.com.

Funding may be available through the Passport Program under Community Participation Supports or Caregiver Respite.
