Sandra Schmirler Foundation donates over $21K to hospital foundation

This money was used to purchase equipment for the NICU

Thanks to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, Sault Area Hospital has some new tools to help our community’s smallest patients – in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation honours the memory of Olympic gold-medal winning Canadian curler, Sandra Schmirler. Their vision is to give every baby the chance to grow up and be a champion, like Sandra – and they do so with gifts to NICUs across Canada, helping support the purchase of critical medical equipment. With their generous gift of $21,397 to Sault Area Hospital Foundation, they’ve helped to purchase two new pieces of equipment: a glidescope, and a phototherapy blanket.

“Both of these pieces of equipment were identified as critical needs for our NICU,” said Teresa Martone, executive director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “While the glidescope was needed for patient safety when placing a breathing tube, the phototherapy blanket will have a direct impact on patient comfort – allowing a baby to be held, rocked and fed during important phototherapy treatments. Both safety and improving patient experiences are high priorities for our hospital – thanks to this generous gift from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, we can accomplish both.”
