The Sault Ste. Marie paramedics wrapped up their Breast Cancer Campaign with the Canadian Cancer Society this week. Throughout this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the paramedics could be spotted wearing pink lapels to show their support for this cause.

This dedicated group of community heroes raised money throughout the month of October in a variety of creative ways. Bringing ambulances to grocery stores to sell pink ribbons on Thanksgiving Saturday helped them raise over $4,000 in one day! Other efforts included a pumpkin painting workshop, and collection cans at a number of local businesses.

All in all, the paramedics of Sault Ste. Marie raised a grand total of $6,048.55 for breast cancer research and support services. Breast cancer survival rates have come a long way – but one in eight women will still be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. On average, we lose 14 Canadian women to breast cancer every single day – so there is still a lot of work to be done.

These funds will help support local women with breast cancer by means of transportation to treatment, providing trusted cancer information, and by funding life-saving cancer research and clinical trials.

Most notably – the local Canadian Cancer Society office will be opening a brand-new wig and turban program in Sault Ste. Marie. Wigs can help bring a lot of confidence back to women fighting cancer and can be very expensive. A brand-new wig can cost upwards of $1,000. This new program will help any local woman fighting cancer choose a “new-look” free of charge.

Organizer of the paramedic’s campaign – Kylie Pratt is an incredible example of a local hero. The funding her team was able to raise will bring new hope to so many women. This team is an incredible example of making a BIG difference with a small team. It doesn’t take a lot of people to make a big difference – it just takes a lot of heart.
